Ruthie was my first real girlfriend, most of our sophomore and junior years of high school. We kept in touch for a while after high school, but then it was many years before the internet and sites such as Classmates made it possible to reconnect. We had some long chats on Facebook, and sent each other e-cards and emails at birthdays and holidays. She was unfailingly cheerful and really looking forward to her retirement, so she could spend more time with her grandkids. She was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer in November 2013, immediately moved to Hawaii to be with her daughter, and died December 31, 2013.
